USA vs Canada prediction

A shock defeat at the hands of Italy saw USA’s fate taken out of their hands going into the final match of Pool B. Fortunately for them, the Italians did USA a huge favour by crushing Mexico 9-1 and ensuring Mark DeRosa’s men qualified for the quarter-finals with a 3-1 record. DeRosa has since come under fire from American fans and media alike after an interview of him prior to the Italy game went viral, which saw him say that his team had already punched their ticket to the WBC quarter-finals when in fact they hadn’t.

Fortunately for DeRosa, he and his players have been handed a second chance and they’ll be expected to take it against a Canadian team who may have won their pool, but do not boast the quality of personnel across their line-up that Team USA do.

Canada are another nation who’ve endured a mixed time of things so far at the World Baseball Classic. Things were looking dicey for them in Pool A after losing 4-3 to Panama despite an MLB proven starter in Jameson Taillon on the mound to begin that contest. However, Canada pulled themselves together when needed, edging past pool hosts Puerto Rico in a 3-2 nailbiter before eliminating Cuba in a winner-take-all contest.

That sets up another must-see battle between two countries who’ve grabbed headlines for their sporting showdowns over the past few weeks. It was only recently that USA defeated Canada in both Men and Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal matches in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Those two wins each came in overtime, but as we turn our attentions to baseball. USA will be hoping that extra innings won’t be required in this one.

Logan Webb gets the ball for his second Team USA appearance after a great outing against Brazil in pool play. Canada counter with Michael Soroka, who can reach the late 90s with a nasty sinker thrown in. But Soroka’s recent pedigree at the highest level is not great and quite frankly, USA have no excuse not to put runs on the board against him when considering the ability and resumes of their hitters.

Despite scoring 35 runs across four games, it’s hard to shake the feeling that USA’s bats have been cold so far in the tournament and clutch hits with runners in scoring position has proven problematic, although Pete Crow-Armstrong did his best to buck the trend with two home runs against Italy, one of those a three-run-shot. If the USA can get runners in scoring position early in an inning rather than with two out, they’ll be in a far better position to cash in. Following their lifeline handed to them by Italy along with a much-needed day off, USA should come out with fire in their bellies and really look to make a statement to the competition. They are a better team than Canada and are well worth backing to show it with a commanding victory in Houston.
