Venezuela vs Japan prediction
Samurai Japan were flawless over the course Pool C, thrilling all their fans in the Tokyo Done by winning four from four with 34 runs scored and only nine given up, the second least of those nations remaining in the competition. Shohei Ohtani was centre of attention with two home runs, including a Grand Slam against Chinese Taipei. Munetaka Murakami also cleared the bases with the Grand Slam of his own in Japan’s final pool game against Czechia, finding form at just the right time as the knockout stage arrives.
Venezuela will provide Japan with their biggest challenge yet when you take into account their quality of batters, led by the formidable former MLB National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. Luis Arraez was outstanding in pool play, recording seven hits, six runs and nine RBIs and Venezuela’s only defeat in the tournament so far came against Dominican Republic in a memorable battle that finished 7-5 as Team DR were given by far their toughest test so far.
Circumstances change for Samurai Japan heading into knockout baseball. Firstly, they go from playing in front of largely their own supporters in Tokyo, to a crowd set be filled with Venezuelan fans in Miami. Secondly, they are taking on a team capable of matching them from a hitting perspective, which makes pitching even more critical and likely match-defining.
This is where Japan could have an edge. Whilst Venezuela are sending out their ace in Ranger Suarez, an excellent post-season pitcher in his own right and a leftie probably most capable of stifling the offense of Ohtani, Japan counter with arguably one of the top three best pitchers in the world right now. 2026 World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto is a once in a generation talent with multiple ‘out pitches’, high-level endurance and an unflappable demeanour on the mound. Yamamoto only pitched 2-2/3 innings vs Chinese Taipei but didn’t allow a single hit and will surely be given license to reach the 80-pitch threshold in the quarter-finals.
It's also worth noting they key Venezuelan batters such as William Contreras and Jackson Chourio are struggling for form at the plate. Without those two performing, it’s hard to see Team Venezuela scoring enough runs against the Japanese pitchers. The likes of Acuna Jr and Arraez need support.
The outcome of this game is arguable the hardest to call of all the quarter-finals. Team Japan will be favourites and rightly so as the defending champions with Ohtani leading from the front. However, Venezuela are absolutely capable of pulling off an upset, especially if they can work Yamamoto and get him out of the game fairly early, say within the first five innings. In the end though, Samurai Japan’s all-round disciplined play along with the presence of ‘Yoshi’ tips the scales their way and backing them has to be favoured.
