17th-seed Daria Kasatkina overcame Katerina Siniakova in the first round, overcoming a mid-match wobble to win a three-set contest and avoid losing in the first round at Roland Garros for what would have been the first time in her career.

It was also a significant victory for the 28-year-old in the sense that it was her first Grand Slam win representing Australia, after switching allegiances from Russia in March.

Local hope Leolia Jeanjean was bagelled in the first set of her opener against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu but, with the aid of an injury to her opponent, prevailed 0-6, 7-5, 3-0, with her opponent retiring in the third set.

The 29-year-old won only 51% of points behind her first serve though, and she will need to significantly improve on that statistic if she is to be competitive against her higher-ranked opponent here.

Jeanjean will have the support of the home crowd of course, but former semi-finalist Kasatkina is an adept clay-courter and has the experience to handle a partisan atmosphere.
