THE LOWDOWN

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa didn’t get anywhere close to completing a T20i series victory over India as they were thrashed in the third game, beaten by 106 runs in Johannesburg. The Proteas will hope a change in format brings better luck but after being outplayed in all departments, they’ll need to improve considerably here at the same venue. This marks South Africa’s first ODI since Quinton de Kock’s 50-over retirement, with Western Province’s Tony de Zorzi given the chance to step into his shoes at the top of the order.

INDIA

KL Rahul leads what is essentially a second-string India squad for this ODI series with the tourists prioritising the upcoming Test series against the Proteas and ensuring all that star players are adequately rested. Whilst this does bring opportunities for players in the ODI format and serves as huge motivation for those given an opportunity, it does potentially weaken India at the same time with a significant lack of international 50-over experience.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa impressed at the World Cup in the longer white ball format, even if they were eventually beaten in the semi-finals. They face a much-changed India side to the one who cruised their way to the final before losing against Australia. Expect the Proteas to come roaring back following their embarrassment in the last T20i, perhaps taking advantage of an Indian bowling attack missing all their notable ODI stars. Back a home win in this one.
