NEW ZEALAND
- New Zealand cruised to a seven-wicket triumph in the opening ODI after chasing down a target of 203 with 11.3 overs to spare thanks largely to an unbeaten 103 from Will Young, batting at three.
- Fast bowler Blair Tickner also shone for the Black Caps, taking four wickets on debut and will be looking to impress once again here as he takes advantage of players such as Trent Boult and Tim Southee being away at the IPL.
NETHERLANDS
- Netherlands’ first ODI since their series defeat in Afghanistan saw them comfortably beaten after they were bowled out for just 202 batting first and it could have been far worse at one stage, as they were reduced to 45/5 after just 13 overs.
- Whilst the top order misfired completely, the bowlers were left with too much to do and were unable to build on Logan van Beek’s early wicket of Martin Guptill, with this lack of cutting edge really underlining the difference in quality between the Test match nations and the associate nations whether it be red or white ball cricket.
THE PREDICTION
The strength-in-depth of New Zealand has to be admired even if they are up against weak opposition in Netherlands. Despite missing numerous players, the Black Caps still contain a top order that boasts significant international quality and the likes of Tickner stepping up with the ball was a bonus. Whilst Netherlands will be expected to significantly improve with the bat this time round, New Zealand should still be able to come through as comfortable winners in this second ODI, as they are simply a far stronger team in all departments.
