Sloane Stephens vs Clara Tauson prediction

Sloane Stephens was granted a wildcard for the US Open. She won the event nine years ago, defeating Madison Keys in the final. The 33-year-old is now outside the world’s top 200, following a tough spell with injury. She has managed to play more events in 2026, but she is yet to reach a quarter-final. However, she did find some form at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month, as she won two matches in a row to reach the third-round. Stephens was a break up in both sets against Marta Kostyuk but went on to lose.

She faces Clara Tauson in round one. The Dane does carry some form into New York, as she reached the Monterrey Open quarter-finals in her last tournament. Tauson has also reached two WTA semi-finals this season, in Abu Dhabi and Athens. However, injury and form have seen her drop out of the world’s top 40, and she is not seeded for this Grand Slam event.

Tauson’s greater power and aggressive baseline game make her the favourite, but Stephens will want to produce a quality performance on the biggest stage, in front of a home crowd. If she can extend the rallies and force Tauson to hit under pressure, she can remain competitive.
