Kimberly Birrell’s poor form continued at the Monterrey Open as she suffered a fifth straight defeat following a loss to Darja Vidmanova in the opening round. The Australian has not tasted victory since the first-round of Wimbledon right at the end of June. Her best form occurred at the start of the year, as she advanced to two tour-level semi-finals in Adelaide and Austin.

Birrell faces Petra Marcinnko in round one. The Croatian is also struggling to put results together, as she lost her first-round matches in Cincinnati and Monterrey to Simona Waltert and Alycia Parks respectively. Her highlight of the season was the first tour-level title of her career in Rabat.

Birrell won their first match at the ATX Open after coming from a set down to win, but Marcinko comfortably won their next encounter in Eastbourne.
