THE LOWDOWN

INDIA

India captain Rohit Sharma will be rested for this opening ODI, as will Virat Kohli, leaving two big holes in India’s top order. This does however, mean players such as Shreyas Iyer have an opportunity to stake their claim, whilst experienced spin-bowler Ravichandran Ashwin has been called up for the series with plenty of eyes no doubt on him and how he performs. Kuldeep Yadav, a star performer in the recently concluded Asia Cup has also been rested.

AUSTRALIA

As is the case with India, Australia will look to balance rest with match practice here. Captain Pat Cummins is expected to play, as will batter Steve Smith. Mitchell Starc could also feature in this first ODI although it would be a surprise if he plays every match across the series. After impressing in South Africa, Marnus Labuschagne should get one last chance to put himself in the frame for a late World Cup call-up.

THE PREDICTION

An intriguing series just prior to the World Cup lies ahead. Although India contains significant strength-in-depth within their squad, not having the likes of Rohit and Kohli available in this particular will be a blow. When you also take into account Steve Smith, Labuschagne and David Warner featuring for Australia, that extra firepower with the bat makes the tourists worth backing to claim victory in this first ODI.

BETTING TIP: INDIA TO WIN
