South Africa’s top order did the job for them in the opening game, putting big runs on the board, ensuring the Proteas recorded a substantial first innings score and allowing the bowlers to turn up the heat on Australia. At one stage things looked promising for the hosts at 60 without loss before a horrific collapse saw them fall to 89/6 with batters three through seven all being dismissed for a single-figure score.

Spin-bowler Keshav Maharaj was primarily responsible for the collapse and his five-wicket-haul was key. Australia will need to play him significantly better in the second ODI, which will be played in Mackay. You would expect a notable response from this Australian side and particularly the middle order who wilted so miserably last time out.

Whilst South Africa may be smelling blood, the Australians are built of stern stuff and their batting line-up is surely too strong to avoid a second consecutive flow. Therefore, consider backing the home side to even things up.
