THE TEAM NEWS

BANGLADESH

Coach: Steve Rhodes

Captain: Mashrafe Mortaza

  • Bangladesh enter the World Cup with modest expectations as the semi-finals are undoubtedly beyond their reach but they will hope to compete in most of their matches and they will be motivated to spring a surprise or two against some of the more fancied nations.

  • The opening partnership has been something of an issue for them in recent years but Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar appear to have solved that problem and have been in excellent form of late and unlike Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, their batting is strong enough to compete against the top teams.

  • Mushfiqur Rahim continues to be a key man in the middle order while they will also hope Shakib Al Hasan can make a major impact with both bat and ball, if they are to trouble South Africa in this opening match, while skipper Mashrafe Mortaza has shaken off an injury concern and will play here.

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Ottis Gibson

Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • South Africa had the misfortune of coming up against an inspired England team in the opening match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup on Thursday, and they will know that they have little margin for error in this match as they aim to get a win under their belts against Bangladesh.

  • Hashim Amla was forced to retire hurt in that match after a blow to the helmet and even though he returned to the crease later in the innings, he is a doubt to play here and he could miss out with David Miller waiting in the wings to come into the side which would see Markram move up to open with De Kock.

  • Dale Steyn missed the opener due to his shoulder problem and they may hold him out here given the good performances of Rabada and Ngidi, while Chris Morris has a chance of coming into the team at the expense of Pretorious.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa are competing with New Zealand according to the bookmakers as fourth favourites but after losing their opening match against England, they simply have to win this one. On paper they look to have the edge in quality over Bangladesh, but Mashrafe Mortaza’s men will be no pushovers. They have a strong batting line-up and a respectable bowling attack that will test South Africa, and although Faf du Plessis’ men should win, this may be a closer match than men expect.
