STAN WAWRINKA

  • Wawrinka won what was surely the match of the tournament in the fourth round as he defeated Greek starlet Stefanos Tsitsipas 8-6 in the deciding set in a match high on quality and drama.
  • That bruising encounter lasted over five hours and the 2015 French Open champion will have to dig deep into his reserves to find the energy required to face his compatriot here.
  • Despite the lopsided nature of this rivalry, all three of Wawrinka's wins over Federer have come on clay, with the most recent of those being a straight-sets victory at the 2015 French Open (also a quarter-final).

ROGER FEDERER

  • Roger Federer has quietly made his way through his first French Open since 2015 without dropping a set in his first four matches and now faces Swiss rival Stan Wawrinka for the fourth time at Roland-Garros.
  • By his own admission, Federer has had a kind draw up until the quarter-finals but he will surely be satisfied with his level of play so far and he has looked as comfortable as ever on the clay.
  • The 20-time Grand Slam champion has a dominant 22-3 career lead over Wawrinka which is somewhat surprising given the standard of his opponent, but this surface is something of a leveller between the two.

THE PREDICTION

Don't be fooled here by Federer's heavy lead in terms of the head-to-head tally as the scales are more evenly balanced when it comes to meetings on clay, with Federer edging it 4-3. The pair met at this very stage of the 2015 French Open when Wawrinka was a comfortable victor on his way to lifting the trophy that year, and if it wasn't for his gruelling fourth-round defeat of Tsitsipas on Sunday, it would be tempting to back Stan to repeat that feat given his level of play so far at Roland-Garros. With all factors considered though, the fresher Federer could just have the edge but it is likely to be another close battle that could go the distance.
