MARIUS COPIL & UGO HUMBERT

  • Marius Copil and Ugo Humbert lost to the top seeds Qureshi and Gonzalez in the semi-finals at the Ilkley Trophy Challenger event two weeks ago.
  • They find themselves part of an unlikely story at Wimbledon this year as the first opponents of Andy Murray and his men’s doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert which will see a relatively massive crowd for a first-round doubles match.
  • Romanian Copil lost in his first-round singles match to Argentina’s Guido Pella in four sets yesterday while Ugo Humbert overcame the 16th seed and fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in five sets.

PIERRE-HUGUES HERBERT & ANDY MURRAY

  • Pierre-Hugues Herbert lost his first-round singles match to last year’s finalist Kevin Anderson yesterday but he may well have been distracted by this unlikely men’s doubles partnership he finds himself in.
  • The Frenchman won the Australian Open men’s doubles final with Nicolas Mahut back in January, while his Wimbledon partner Andy Murray won Queen’s a fortnight ago with Feliciano Lopez in his first tournament back from a hip operation.
  • Two-times Wimbledon champion Murray is working his way back to playing in the men’s singles draw once again but has some big doubles victories on his record, including the Davis Cup final victory with his brother Jamie in 2015.

THE PREDICTION

Nobody could have predicted that Andy Murray returning from a serious operation that might have ended his career and a 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez could have won the doubles title at Queen’s. That win puts pressure on Murray and Herbert here to hit the ground running after Murray’s loss (with Marcelo Melo) at Eastbourne last week put a dampener on proceedings. However, Murray’s sheer determination to return from the brink of retirement, as well as his heroics at Wimbledon in previous years, will garner he and Herbert almost total support throughout the tournament. With Herbert, an excellent doubles player with a Grand Slam trophy in his locker already this year, Murray has every chance of winning Wimbledon once again, albeit in a different category. Starting with a likely nervous victory here.
