FEDERICO DELBONIS
- Federico Delbonis lost in the first round of the Turkish Open last week to put a quick end to his grass-court preparations.
- The Argentine had a decent clay-court season before that, losing to Alexander Zverev in the Geneva semi-finals before a second-round defeat to Fabio Fognini in four sets at Roland-Garros.
- Fognini also beat Delbonis in one of the 28-year-old’s four consecutive first-round losses at Wimbledon back in 2016 and the Argentine will be desperate to achieve a win at SW19 on his fifth attempt.
DAN EVANS
- Dan Evans took the first set against fellow Brit Kyle Edmund in the quarter-finals at Eastbourne last week but the British number one rallied to defeat him in three.
- Evans is well on his way back to his highest career ATP ranking of 41 as he has moved up four places to 61 with that Eastbourne performance and his two Challenger event wins that precede it.
- The 29-year-old’s charisma, as well as his play-style that is so often likened to Roger Federer, bring him a lot of support at Wimbledon and he is in a great position to emulate his best performance of reaching the third round back in 2016.
THE PREDICTION
Dan Evans has put in an extensive amount of grass-court practice and it showed at Eastbourne where he was unlucky not to beat British number one Kyle Edmund. His opponent Federico Delbonis has played just the one grass-court match in preparation for SW19, which he lost, and while he could take a set, Evans looks like the player in form. Furthermore, this match will be well-supported by British crowds who can carry Dan Evans through to the second round.
