THE TEAM NEWS
NETHERLANDS
- The Netherlands produced an impressive display to defeat Italy and progress to the semi-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup which is the first time they have ever reached this stage of the competition.
- Italy had been difficult to score against throughout the tournament and once again made things hard for the Netherlands as they again struck late with two goals in the final 20 minutes from Vivianne Miedema and Stefanie van der Gragt proving to be the difference.
- There are once against expected to be no changes to the side selected by the European champions as they look to reach another major final with their winning run in major tournament matches stretching to 11 games following the win over Italy.
SWEDEN
- Sweden produced a shock as they defeated two-time champions Germany in their Women’s World Cup quarter-final clash as they came from a goal behind to claim a memorable victory.
- The Germans took the lead in the 16th minute but were soon pegged back by the Swedes when Sofia Jakobsson scored a brilliant solo effort before Stina Blackstenius edged her side ahead just after the break which was enough to seal the win.
- Sweden are likely to have to soak up pressure like they did against Germany with the Netherlands set to see a lot more of the ball but may have to do so without Nilla Fischer who had to come off with a knock against Germany.
THE PREDICTION
Netherlands reached their first ever semi-final of a Women’s World Cup in just their second tournament when defeating Italy in their quarter-final clash and now stand just two games away from adding to their European Championship. Sweden stand in their way and will not be easy opposition after they knocked out two-time champions Germany. The Swedes will be tasked with a similar problem in this game with the Netherlands likely to dominate proceedings with the ball and whilst they will take confidence from the win over the Germans, the Netherlands can continue their superb run at major tournaments and make it 12 consecutive wins.
