THE TEAM NEWS

BRAZIL

  • Brazil are no longer classed as one of the elite teams in women’s football and that could be highlighted at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a difficult group meaning they are far from certain of even making it out of the group stage.
  • They start their campaign with a contest against Jamaica which they should win but more difficult tests lie in wait against Australia and Italy for the side standing in tenth in the world rankings.
  • Marta is one of the best players to ever play in the women’s game but this is set to be her last World Cup at the age of 33 and she will have a lot of responsibility resting on her shoulders in this tournament.

JAMAICA

  • Jamaica created history by qualifying for this tournament and will fly the flag as the first ever side from the Caribbean to appear in the finals with the entire nation set to get behind their side.
  • The Reggae Girlz are ranked 53rd in the world – the lowest ranking of any side in the tournament – but they will not let that stop them from attempting to achieve the unthinkable of progressing to the knockout stages.
  • Jamaica possess a star in the making in the form of 22-year-old Khadija Shaw who has scored 26 goals in just 30 appearances for her country and is already the highest scoring player to ever appear for Jamaica.

THE PREDICTION

Jamaica already have plenty of positives to take away from this tournament by simply qualifying but they will want to put on a show in their history-making appearance. Their first game is against Brazil and whilst they are likely to taste defeat, they could make things awkward for their opponents. The Brazilians are no longer as feared as they used to be and this could be a tournament that really highlights that but with Marta wanting to go out on a high, she can lead her side to the win in this contest.
