Ugo Blanchet continued his brilliant run in New York as he defeated Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik in five sets to advance to round three. Blanchet had not won a match at a major prior to this tournament but he picked up his second successive victory by beating the Czech 6-7 7-6 3-6 6-4 7-6 after four hours and 23 minutes.
Tomas Machac will be his next opponent as he produced a fabulous performance to defeat the dangerous Joao Fonseca in straight sets. Machac got through a tight first set but began to dominate as the match wore on, winning 7-6 6-2 6-3 without losing his serve. Machac made the fourth-round here last year and he’s just one victory from doing so again.
Blanchet has done brilliantly to get this far and should be full of confidence, but Machac is the more seasoned pro and will prove to be more of a threat during the longer rallies. The world number 22 is a firm favourite to get through.
