Tomas Machac advanced to the round-of-16 for the second straight year after comfortably getting past Ugo Blanchet in straight sets. The Czech won 78% of his first serve points as he beat Blanchet 7-5 6-3 6-1 after one hour and 52 minutes. Machac had lost his last three matches heading into the final major of the year, but he’s yet to drop a set in the tournament so far.
His opponent in the fourth-round will be Taylor Fritz. The American battled his way past qualifier Jerome Kym in four sets. He took the first set on a tiebreak but squandered three set points as Kym levelled the match up. Fritz broke for the first time in the third set and closed out the victory in the fourth to win 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-4.
Fritz leads the head-to-head 2-0. Their most recent match was right at the start of the year at the United Cup, with Machac retiring near the end of the second set despite winning the first. The American’s strong first serve and solid work from the baseline could press Machac into defence early.
Machac is likely to counter that with tactical variety and consistency, as he looks to engage in long rallies and disrupt Fritz’s rhythm. Nevertheless, the American is a tough man to beat at the US Open and he is favourite to come through.
