THE PREDICTION

World number 49 Zhizhen Zhang burst onto the scene this time last season with a hugely impressive run to the quarter-finals in Madrid, stunning Taylor Fritz, Cam Norrie and Denis Shapovalov each from a set down before running out of steam against Aslan Karatsev. The 27-year-old brings a two-match losing streak into his return and this very tough opening fixture against Miomir Kecmanovic, whose similarly robust, physical game should make for an entertaining clash here. World number 66 Kecmanovic is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but it has been a tough start to 2024 and he brings an identical 1-2 record on clay to Zhang into their first encounter. Back Zhang to earn at least a set given his affinity with the conditions in Madrid to leave a likely three-setter up to chance.

TIP: ZHIZHEN ZHANG TO WIN A SET
