YULIA PUTINTSEVA VS SLOANE STEPHENS PREDICTION

Expect an entertaining clash between two players with a history of aggro as former world number three Sloane Stephens takes on in-form number 37 Yulia Putintseva for the eighth time. 31-year-old Stephens won her maiden Grand Slam title on home soil at the US Open in 2017 but she is at her best on clay, coming close to a second major in finishing runner-up to Simona Halep here in 2018.

The American won the Rouen Open on French clay last month but she has struggled to make much of an impact since, bringing a three-match losing streak into Paris that includes a straight-sets defeat to Putintseva at the Italian Open. 29-year-old Putintseva trails Stephens 4-3 in their head-to-head record but leads 2-1 on clay after victory in Rome – although Stephens overcame the Kazakh in three sets in the third round here last summer.

Six of their seven encounters have seen sets go both ways to offer a suitable alternative to what should be one of the best matches of the first round here but, if forced to side with a winner, Stephens has that extra, illusive gear at her disposal at this level.
