World number 64 Yulia Putintseva brings some decent form into the Australian Open after an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the Hobart International this week, beating fifth seed Marie Bouzkova en-route. The 29-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she is certainly one of the streakier players on tour, with most of her best runs coming on her favoured clay in recent seasons. 21-year-old Anastasia Zakharova qualified handily this week to make her Grand Slam debut here in Melbourne and she looks ready to make the jump up to some more main tour action this season after enjoying plenty of success on the ITF circuit in 2023. Former number 27 Putintseva should be winning this first tour-level encounter in straight sets but the Kazakh rarely plays in any sort of predictable manner.
