World number three Coco Gauff conceded just two games against Elise Mertens to celebrate her 20th birthday in style on Court 1 and she will enjoy more fervent home support in this intriguing first encounter with surprise quarter-finalist Yue Yuan. 25-year-old Yuan will break inside the top 40 for the first time after a remarkable run from winning her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open two weeks ago through to an impressive comeback over Daria Kasatkina on Wednesday, extending her winning streak to nine matches. The Chinese stunned compatriot Qinwen Zheng in the second round to look a dark horse for a deep run but a win here would certainly be one of the biggest shocks on the WTA tour in recent months – and that is saying something.
Gauff began her Indian Wells campaign by surviving a real scare against Clara Burel but she has grown into the tournament with frightening speed to suddenly look a real contender. Back the American to win outright, with Yuan warranting plenty of caution.
