World number 41 Xinyu Wang conceded just four games to a clearly exhausted Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Monday in another example of the effects of the congested tennis schedule. The 22-year-old’s confidence should be boosted, though, after one of the biggest wins of her career so far and she looks ready to enjoy the next couple of months on tour after a run to the semi-finals of the Hua Hin Championships two weeks ago. World number 31 Victoria Azarenka needed three sets to oust in-form Magdalena Frech on Monday but she should be better for an early scare as she hopes to maintain what has been a promising start to 2024. The former world number one has won at least three matches in her two tournaments so far this season but this will be a tough test against up-and-coming Wang, who proved herself a future hardcourt star with a run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer. Back Azarenka to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
