World number 239 Storm Hunter, neé Sanders, is a popular figure at the Australian Open as a close friend of fellow Aussie Ash Barty and she received a wildcard to the main draw in Melbourne following some strong results on the ITF circuit last season. Hunter will be targeting a first major singles result here after losing each of her six previous first round matches at Grand Slams but the 28-year-old is an excellent doubles player as the current world number 12 after claiming the Mixed Doubles title at the US Open alongside John Peers. World number 89 Xinyu Wang started last season as the most impressive of the new generation of Chinese youngsters on the WTA tour but after a strong start she fell behind the likes of Qinwen Zheng and Xiyu Wang in that respect. The 21-year-old has all the potential to emulate her peers, though, and a run to the quarter-finals of the Hobart International was an encouraging one this week. Hunter will be well-backed on Court 7 by a partisan crowd but her best chances in Melbourne remain in the doubles draws. Back Xinyu Wang to edge this outright but leave the match out of an accumulator.
