World number 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova has enjoyed an excellent start to 2024 with eye-catching results over Elena Rybakina, Veronika Kudermetova and Donna Vekic. The Russian has lost to Jelena Ostapenko twice in the latter stages of tournaments already this season, including in the final of the Linz Open last weekend, to look like needing top quality opposition to oust her and that suggests she can roll through to the second round here. 28-year-old Viktoriya Tomova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 64th after a strong Australian swing but she squeaked into the main draw at the Qatar Masters as a lucky loser after defeat to Bernarda Pera on Saturday. Alexandrova beat the Bulgarian in three sets at Roland-Garros last summer, in their only tour-level encounter to date, and she is in much better shape, as well as conditions that suit her, here.
