THE LOWDOWN
VICTORIA AZARENKA
Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka conceded just four games to Panna Udvardy in a statement of intent on Monday. The 32-year-old former world number one was a Grand Slam finalist as recent as 2020 at the US Open and she still has every chance her in Melbourne after finding some excellent recent form. Her most recent of 21 WTA titles came in 2020 at the Western & Southern Open Masters event.
JIL TEICHMANN
24-year-old Jil Teichmann is up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 34th and she may feel a little hard done by missing out on the seedings for the Australian Open. She beat an out-of-sorts Petra Martic in straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time after an outstanding season last year saw her reach a first Masters final before defeat to Ash Barty at the Cincinnati Open.
THE PREDICTION
Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann proved what she can do at the Cincinnati Open last year when she beat Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova en-route to the final there. She has a fair chance at causing the upset here in a first meeting with Victoria Azarenka but the Belarussian has the big game experience required to weather her opponent here. Take the two-time champion to reach the third round.
