THE LOWDOWN

VICTORIA AZARENKA

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka beat 11th seed Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets on Saturday to build on some strong results over Camila Giorgi and Clara Tauson. The 34-year-old became world number one after winning her first of back-to-back titles here in 2012 and she was a top 10 mainstay for many years after, reaching at least the semi-finals at all four Grand Slams and making five finals overall, losing her most recent of three US Open finals to Naomi Osaka in 2020.

DAYANA YASTREMSKA

World number 93 Dayana Yastremska snapped Emma Navarro’s seven-match winning streak in three sets on Saturday. The 23-year-old stunned an out-of-sorts Marketa Vondrousova in the first round after coming through qualifying as the top seed last week. Yastremska set a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st in January 2020 after making the round of 16 at Wimbledon the year before and she has matched her best major run here.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling clash between two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka and former number 21 Dayana Yastremska, who has suddenly found the rhythm she has been lacking for long. The Ukrainian should enjoy plenty of the neutral support against Belarus’ Azarenka but less than she might expect against a popular veteran here in Melbourne, who will likely be encouraged by her affinity with this tournament. Azarenka beat Yastremska in straight sets at the Guadalajara Masters last September to lead their head-to-head 2-1 but she will find a much tougher version of the enigmatic 23-year-old here. Back Azarenka to win outright with all the experience required to weather some storms.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN
