THE PREDICTION
This is an intriguing match between two players desperately seeking their late 2023 form in world number 19 Veronika Kudermetova and number 43 Xinyu Wang. 22-year-old Wang beat Hailey Baptiste in straight sets to win her first match at a tournament for the third time on the spin but she has failed to win two in a row since losing to eventual champion Diana Shnaider in the semi-finals of the Hua Hin Championships in early February.
26-year-old Kudermetova, however, has failed to do ever since claiming the most prestigious title of her career at the Tokyo Open last October, where she stunned Iga Swiatek, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Jessica Pegula with some searing peak-of-her-powers stuff. The Russian should be able to find her way through her opening match here in Miami but this is certainly a fixture to keep separate from an accumulator. Back Wang to earn at least a set with the momentum of a win in her legs to leave this head-scratcher up to chance.
