THE PREDICTION
World number 32 Sorana Cirstea could be one to watch at the Canada Masters after she burst into form on the Sunshine Double back in March. The 33-year-old stunned Caroline Garcia (twice), Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Muchova and Marketa Vondrousova en-route to the round of 16 at Indian Wells and then the semi-finals in Miami, where she lost to eventual champion Petra Kvitova, before winding down a little over the summer. World number 43 Varvara Gracheva almost upset Sabalenka from Wimbledon last month, taking the first set and serving for the match before the second seed fought back to win their second round bout. The 23-year-old, now representing France, came into form on hardcourts earlier this season to finish runner-up to Marta Kostyuk at the Austin Open and it will be interesting to see what she can do with the rest of her 2023. Cirstea beat Gracheva comfortably in Melbourne early last season but both players have improved since then. Take the Romanian to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
