THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Ugo Humbert grabbed a memorable fur-set victory over David Goffin on Monday that will have exorcized some demons for the Frenchman after he contracted covid-19 here two years ago. Humbert’s previous best level dropped off the face of the earth after his exit here in 2022 but he fought back up the rankings tirelessly last season to set a new career-high of 20th after victory at the Metz Open in October. This looks set to be a thrilling first encounter with rising Chinese star Zhizhen Zhang, who will break inside the top 50 on tour after ousting Federico Coria in three tight sets on Monday. Zhang won gold at the Asian Games last autumn amidst strong runs at the Shanghai Masters and the US Open, stunning fifth seed Casper Ruud in five sets at this stage in New York.

Humbert is also no stranger to a marathon match on court but the Frenchman should be able to find a way through eventually, meaning the five-set option is a tempting but considerable risk here. Back Humbert to win at least two sets as the likelier winner of two players who will be targeting the second week at least in Melbourne.

TIP: UGO HUMBERT TO WIN TWO SETS
