THE PREDICTION
This should be a fierce battle between two players who brought career-high ATP world rankings into the Australian Open. World number nine Hubert Hurkacz burst into form on the late hardcourt swing last year to win a second Masters title in Shanghai, also finishing runner-up at the Swiss Indoors after ousting Ugo Humbert in three tight sets in the semi-finals. World number 20 Humbert was on the long road back to form last year, putting in the hard graft on the Challenger circuit before deep runs in Shanghai and Basel too and he ended the year with a first ATP title since 2021 with a near-spotless run at the Metz Open. Humbert has dropped a set in each of his two matches so far against two tough foes in former number seven Davis Goffin and up-and-coming Zhizhen Zhang whilst Hurkacz had to fight back from 2-1 down to oust 18-year-old Jakub Mensik on Thursday to look the more fragile.
This match is a serious candidate for five sets but Hurkacz leads their head-to-head 2-0 to look the slightest of favourites in these conditions. Back both players to win a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak between two huge servers, with one played in each of their two meetings so far.
