THE LOWDOWN
25-year-old Ugo Humbert looked destined for the top 10 in 2021 after an excellent Halle Open title-winning campaign and consistent results against the top players on tour but he suffered a horror season in 2022, contracting covid-19 here in Melbourne before dropping outside the top 100. The Frenchman will feel more than a spot of fate about this return two years on after putting in some serious rebuilding work on the Challenger circuit in the first half of 2023 and then the main tour, capping it off with victory at the Metz Open on home soil to briefly become French number one. Former number seven David Goffin has endured a similar fall from grace in recent seasons, depreciating ever since the suspension of the tour during the pandemic, but he has shown very little sign of returning in the same way. The 33-year-old had to qualify the hard way this week but he is far from the player who was once a mainstay in the last 16 at major tournaments for many seasons.
THE PREDICTION
Goffin beat Humbert in four sets en-route to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2022, the Belgian’s brief spark of hope in an otherwise drab past few seasons, but Humbert won their first encounter on a hardcourt in 2019. The Frenchman withdrew from the Brisbane International last week after an opening win but if he is fit enough to take to court here he can be backed to beat a likely initial strong assault by Goffin. Take Humbert to win outright with four sets about as likely as three.
