This looks likely to be a herculean scrap between two players who are no strangers to the fourth hour of a match. World number 14 Tommy Paul avenged his defeat to Jack Draper in Adelaide last week with an assured four-set victory over the rising British star whilst world number 60 Miomir Kecmanovic edged past 24th seed Jan-Lennard Struff 11-9 in their deciding tiebreaker. 26-year-old Paul reached the semi-finals here last season to change the course of his career, losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic, and he is well capable of going on another run this fortnight after a confidence-booster against Draper.
24-year-old Kecmanovic is much better than his current deflated ranking suggests but the Serb has struggled to put players away in recent times, ending up with a negative record last season despite reaching two tour finals, and nine set splayed already this week suggests he could eventually falter by fatigue. Paul leads their head-to-head 2-1 but their last two meetings came very close, with three tiebreaks in five sets.
