THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Tommy Paul did well to play the match and not the occasion against lucky loser Luca Nardi, who had led a charmed life through the draw before a seriously impressive three-sets victory over an admittedly out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic. 26-year-old Paul has often found his bets tennis on North American hardcourts, notably stunning Carlos Alcaraz in successive seasons at the Canada Masters, and he will be backed to the hilt here as the last remaining American man left in the draw at Indian Wells.
World number nine Casper Ruud looks to be the slight favourite, though, after coming back from a set down to beat in-form Gael Monfils on Wednesday to back-up reaching successive finals in Mexico – finishing runner-up to Jordan Thompson at the Los Cabos Open and to Alex de Minaur in Acapulco. The 25-year-old leads Paul 4-1 in their head-to-head record but, barring an outlier at the Laver Cup last September, all of their matches on tour have come almost imperceptibly close – including two five-set marathons at Roland-Garros in 2020 and at the US Open two years later. Consider taking this match to see three sets as a one-off but otherwise back Ruud to win at least one of them as the likelier of two very capable victors.
