THE PREDICTION

World number 74 Tomas Machac provided one of the biggest shocks of Wednesday with a remarkable straight-sets victory over 17th seed Frances Tiafoe. The Czech had won just one Grand Slam match before this week, losing to Matteo Berrettini here in the second round three years ago, but he has surpassed that record without dropping a set this week to look a credible threat to last year’s semi-finalist Karen Khachanov. World number 15 Khachanov has dropped sets in two tough four-setters over Daniel Altmaier and Aleksandar Kovacevic so far but he is building back some confidence after an early exit in Hong Kong two weeks ago. The Russian has wildly impressed at recent Grand Slams, and he should find a way through this first meeting with Machac over five sets, but back the young Czech to start strong on the biggest day of his career to earn at least a set.
