THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Sebastian Baez may have felt that he had a point to prove against fellow 23-year-old Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta, who romped to victory in Buenos Aires last week. Baez claimed three ATP titles last year to draw level with Diego Schwartzman’s career total in next to no time but he is still chasing the number one spot for his nation with Francisco Cerundolo ahead on more prestigious runs.

World number 117 Thiago Monteiro rode his luck on Wednesday when top seed Carlos Alcaraz was forced to retire early in their match but he beat fellow Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves in straight sets yesterday to earn his time in the limelight on home clay. The 29-year-old has been ranked as high as 69th in recent seasons but it has been an underwhelming past 12 months despite a brief flash of excellence in Miami last March. It would take one of Monteiro’s best ever performances to beat the deceptively good Baez but Rio is electrifying this week off the back of teenage starlet Joao Fonseca’s run and home advantage should take this close. Back Baez to edge through.

TIP: SEBASTIAN BAEZ TO WIN
