THE PREDICTION
World number three Daniil Medvedev finished runner-up at the Australian Open in back-to-back years, first to Novak Djokovic in straight sets in 2021 and then to Rafael Nadal in that historic five-set thriller in 2022. The 27-year-old has reached four Grand Slam finals, winning his only title at the US Open in 2021 to spoil Novak Djokovic’s chance at a calendar slam before the Serb gained revenge in straight sets last September. Medvedev was arguably the form player for the first half of last season but there was a sense of fatigue in the latter stages and that looks to be his reasoning for coming into Melbourne without playing a warm-up event.
The draw gods have offered him a huge chance at making that extra rest count against world number 145 Terence Atmane, who qualified the hard way to make his Grand Slam debut here in Melbourne. The 22-year-old enjoyed plenty of success on the Challenger circuit late last season but Medvedev looks refreshed and ready to charge this fortnight. Take the Russian to win in straight sets.
TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN 3-0
