World number 12 Taylor Fritz came back from a set down to oust a tough foe in Fabian Marozsan on Friday, backing-up a blistering straight-setter against lucky loser Hugo Gaston. The 26-year-old appears to have settled into Melbourne after a five-set scare against Facundo Diaz Acosta in the first round but he is still far from producing his searing best tennis that saw victory at Indian Wells in 2022 and a five-set epic exit to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon later that summer. Fritz reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time here two years ago, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped sets in each of his first two matches at the Australian Open but he looked a lot more assured in a straight-sets result over Luca Van Assche on Friday. The 25-year-old finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here last season in what looked like a corner turned but ended up being a brief island of strong form amidst his prolonged struggles on tour. The Greek has arguably depreciated ever since losing the 2021 Roland-Garros final to Djokovic from two sets up, with just one ATP 250 title claimed in Los Cabos last season nowhere near good enough by his lofty standards.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling clash between two hard-hitting, elite-level players seeking out a return to their previous best. Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head record 3-1 to look the favourite but Fritz took the Greek all the way in an incredible clash at this stage of the Australian Open two years ago and the American has arguably improved since, although not recently, whist Tsitsipas has struggled. Fritz claimed his first win over Tsitsipas in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters last spring, with Tsitsipas two-time defending champion there, to further accentuate the suggestion that this may well be the American’s moment. Five sets leaves plenty of room for both of them to peak and trough, though, so take both players to win a set to leave the victor up to chance.
