THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Taylor Fritz beat Fabio Fognini, a popular cult hero in these parts, in straight sets on Friday to get a good foothold in at the Italian Open, whilst world number 27 Sebastian Korda took the long route to victory over another home hopeful in Flavio Cobolli. 26-year-old Fritz rediscovered some of his more typical grit last week to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Open, impressing in wins over Hubert Hurkacz and Francisco Cerundolo, and he looks the slight favourite in this potential thriller despite Korda owning the only clay title between them.

23-year-old Korda claimed his maiden ATP title on Italian clay in Parma three years ago but he has struggled to make much of a dent on the surface since. The younger American won the Men’s Doubles alongside Jordan Thompson last weekend and he looked in good shape in a three-set exit to Daniil Medvedev in the singles but Fritz should be solid enough to frustrate him into submission. Fritz won their only previous encounter in straight sets, on clay, at the Monte-Carlo Open two years ago and he can be backed to reach the round of 16 here.

TIP: TAYLOR FRITZ TO WIN
