THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Taylor Fritz conceded just four games to lucky loser Hugo Gaston on Wednesday to build back stronger from a five-set scare against Facundo Diaz Acosta in the first round. The 26-year-old won two ATP titles in Delray Beach and Atlanta last season but he struggled to make any significant dents (by his standards) at the more prestigious tournaments, with his run to the quarter-finals of the US Open ended very abruptly by eventual Novak Djokovic. This is a really tricky test for the American, who will at least bring some more confidence into the third round after suffering a five-set exit in the second this time last year, in a first encounter with Fabian Marozsan.
24-year-old Marozsan will break inside the top 60 for the first time after an impressive upset over Francisco Cerundolo, who has struggled so far this year, to back-up a strong opener over former finalist Marin Cilic. The Hungarian is a very dangerous foe with a penchant for upsets, famously stunning Carlos Alcaraz in Rome last summer, but back Fritz to edge his way through on some simmering form.
