THE LOWDOWN

World number eight Andrey Rublev came back from a set down to stun the city of Madrid and its two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday night, ending the tired-looking Spaniard’s 14-match winning streak. 26-year-old Rublev had brought a four-match losing streak into the draw after struggling with his confidence seemingly ever since a controversial disqualification for aggressive behaviour at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where he was defending champion, but he has looked rock-solid so far this campaign to pose a real threat to a now wide-open draw.

World number 13 Taylor Fritz has endured a similarly fluctuating start to 2024, defending his Delray Beach tile in February but taking a three-match losing streak into the Munich Open two weeks ago, where he got back on the horse to finish runner-up to Jan-Lennard Struff. The American, also 26, dropped his first set of an impressive campaign to Francisco Cerundolo on Wednesday but he has ousted a heady mix of clay-courters and big servers so far to bring all the right form into this showdown.

THE PREDICTION

Both players are excellent all-court threats of top 10, if not top five, quality on their respective days but Fritz takes the confidence of a slight 5-3 lead in their head-to-head into this ninth clash. Rublev, however, won their only clay encounter in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters last spring, where he went on to lift his first Masters title, and beating the two-time defending champion should bolster his resolve. Back the Russian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists.

TIP: ANDREY RUBLEV TO WIN A SET
