36-year-old Tatjana Maria brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 42nd into the Australian Open after a decent end to last season but she was well beaten by Viktoriya Tomova on Wednesday in Hobart to throw some doubt over this opener. The German has enjoyed an excellent few seasons of renaissance form built around back-to-back WTA titles claimed at the Bogota Open and she faces the previous winner of that title in 2021 in Camila Osorio, who set a career-high of 33rd in early 2022 after a breakthrough on her favoured clay. The 22-year-old is a capable talent across surfaces but her best tennis has certainly come on the slower surface so far. Osorio reached the second round here last season before defeat to Iga Swiatek but she looks the likelier to crash out early in this first meeting with Maria. Back the German to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
