THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Tamara Korpatsch can break inside the top 70 on tour for the first time if she wins her maiden WTA final here in Cluj-Napoca but the crowd will do their utmost to support home hopeful Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Korpatsch beat her compatriot Eva Lys in straight sets on Saturday to improve on some real scraps earlier this week but Ruse has certainly enjoyed the better results with an opening upset over second seed Alycia Parks and a consummate victory over fourth seed Rebeka Masarova yesterday. 25-year-old Ruse reached two finals in quick succession in 2021, winning one of them at the Hamburg Open, and that experience plus a partisan atmosphere makes her the clear favourite in this first tour-level meeting between the two. Three sets are likelier than two so back Ruse to win outright.
