THE LOWDOWN

Defending Billie Jean King Cup champions Switzerland were well beaten by Czechia in their opening tie in Seville, with 18-year-old debutante Celine Naef impressing the most in a three-set defeat to fellow youngster Linda Noskova. Viktorija Golubic played better than she has for much of a very poor 2023 but fell short against Marie Bouzkova in the first option match, depicting the gaping holes in the Swiss squad in Belinda Bencic’s absence and Jil Teichmann’s severe lack of form. Golubic and Teichmann joined forces in doubles but that was far too steep of a challenge against former number one Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, the strongest pair in the tournament.

Team USA come in to the BJK Cup with, arguably, the deepest squad in the competition – even without initial first option Madison Keys as world number 53 Peyton Stearns comes in as her alternate. Captain Kathy Rinaldi has two former Grand Slam champions to choose from in Sofia Kenin and Sloane Stephens but the likes of Sterns, Danielle Collins and Taylor Townsend have all enjoyed strong singles wins in recent months too. Doubles world number seven Townsend won the Cincinnati title with Alycia Parks back in August and she will likely be saved for that format here, probably partnered with Collins or Stephens depending on match-ups. World number 33 Sofia Kenin is back in the conversation after several years in the wilderness and her fiery game should thrive in this environment, particularly as the nominal first option in Madison Keys’ absence.

THE PREDICTION

A lot of this tie depends on whether Belinda Bencic is fit enough to play in the singles, most likely against Sofia Kenin, but the 26-year-old announced her pregnancy last week and her lack of involvement on Tuesday suggests she may not feature – at least in singles. Sofia Kenin can be backed to beat any of the other three singles options Switzerland can throw her way and Sloane Stephens or Danielle Collins should have enough to see off a likely tough challenge by one of Celine Naef or Viktorija Golubic – with doubles also looking a reasonable steal for the US. Back the Americans to win, probably 3-0.

BETTING TIP: USA TO WIN.
