THE PREDICTION
There will be a huge amount of pressure on both Sumit Nagal and Juncheng Shang’s shoulders as players from two enormous nations who rarely, at least in men’s tennis, find much joy at Grand Slams. 18-year-old Shang brought a career-high ATP world ranking of 140th into a tough opener against Mackenzie McDonald but he stunned the American in five sets, taking the first and last two, to build on an encouraging run to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open two weeks ago. 26-year-old Nagal stole the headlines on Tuesday, though, when he upset in-form 31st seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets to blow his portion of the draw wide open. The Indian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 118th for his efforts as well as a career-changing cash injection that should see him factor more on the main tour this season.
An excellent qualifying campaign means Nagal is yet to drop a set in Melbourne but Shang remains the favourite on recent tour-level form, with the teenager impressing late-on last year too. Sets should go both ways, though, so back Sang to win at least two of them as the likelier of two capable victors.
