THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova brought a career-high WTA world ranking of sixth into the Italian Open after recently returning to form at the Stuttgart Open, where she stunned defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in three sets before defeat to eventual runner-up Marta Kostyuk. The Czech shocked the tennis world with an incredible run to the Wimbledon title last summer but she was a Roland-Garros finalist first, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty in 2019, to further prove her credentials on her favoured clay.

World number 32 Sorana Cirstea is an excellent all-court threat but she is probably at her most comfortable on clay too, despite enjoying the best of her results on hardcourts in recent seasons. The 34-year-old beat Brenda Fruhvirtova in straight sets on Thursday to bounce back from a tough defeat to eventual Madrid champion Iga Swiatek this time two weeks ago but this will be another steep test against Vondrousova, who began to blossom this time last season in Rome. Cirstea has won each of their last three encounters, including in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Masters in February, to lead their head-to-head 3-1 but back Vondrousova to earn at least a set as the likelier to edge through in these conditions.
