THE PREDICTION
This is a proper blockbuster of a first round clash in Miami between former world number one Angelique Kerber, winner of the US Open in 2016, and former number three Sloane Stephens, who claimed her only major title a year later in New York. 30-year-old Stephens leads their head-to-head 5-2 as things stand but it is arguable that her five wins over the German came in her real peak period, with the first coming at Indian Wells in 2015 and the last at the WTA Finals three years later, although Kerber was the best player on the WTA tour in 2016 – losing to the American in Charleston that season.
Stephens beat Kerber in straight sets en-route to her only Masters title here in 2018 but Kerber won their most recent encounter at the US Open three years later to suggest she has the onus again. The German’s return to tour was boosted by a huge run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week, where she stunned Jelena Ostapenko and Veronika Kudermetova before running out of steam, but Stephens’ record looks convincing in this match-up despite some middling results this season. Back Stephens, who will be backed to the hilt as a Florida native, to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance in this likely thriller.
TIP: SLOANE STEPHENS TO WIN A SET
