World number 39 Roman Safiullin reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer before finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Chengdu Open in his first final on tour but he has struggled to match that level in recent months. A run to the semi-finals of the Brisbane 500 in January, via huge wins over Ben Shelton, Alexei Popyrin and Matteo Arnaldi, promised more than has been delivered since but he should be able to navigate a way past former number eight Diego Schwartzman, who continues to falter on tour. 31-year-old Schwartzman came back from a set down to Arthur Rinderknech in qualifying to squeak through to the first round but the Argentine – formerly an ever-present contender at this time of year – has lost each of his last six tour-level matches.
