THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a full-throttle first meeting between world number 24 Jan-Lennard Struff and home hopeful Rinku Hijkata, who brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 70th into the draw. 22-year-old Hijikata announced himself to the Melbourne crowd last season by winning the Men’s Doubles alongside Jason Kubler but he proved himself an intriguing up-and-comer when he reached the round of 16 at the US Open last September. 33-year-old Struff has struggled to stay fit consistently enough to make use of some excellent form in recent seasons but he came perilously close to upsetting Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid Masters final back in April – as a lucky loser no less – before injury saw him miss the majority of the hardcourt swing. Home advantage favours Hijikata in this first meeting between the two but this feels like a decent candidate for five sets. Back both players to win a set or risk the five-set option.
