World number 94 Yafan Wang is through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time after an excellent effort in three sets over Emma Raducanu, backing up a huge fight back from a set and two breaks down to stun Sorana Cirstea in the first round. The 29-year-old enjoyed some peerless form on the ITF circuit last summer to repair her WTA ranking and she looks set to break her career-high of 47th this year if she can maintain her current level. World number 15 Qinwen Zheng is certainly the favourite, though, in this all-Chinese encounter after she also ousted British opposition in Katie Boulter on Thursday. The 21-year-old enjoyed a huge upturn in form late last season to win her first two WTA titles at the Palermo Ladies Open and Zhengzhou Open, with a run to the quarter-finals of the US Open her crowning achievement that suggests more is on the cards here in Melbourne. Three sets seem about as likely as two considering Wang’s battling spirit so far, so take Zheng to win outright.
