THE PREDICTION

19-year-old rising star Qinwen Zheng can break the top 30 on the WTA tour for a first time by reaching the Tokyo Open final and it is hard to say she does not deserve the opportunity after yet another searing campaign. The Chinese youngster beat top seed Paula Badosa in the round of 16 on Wednesday and she is yet to drop a set after also ousting Misaki Doi and, most recently, Claire Liu. This will be her toughest test in Tokyo so far, though, against 25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova. The Russian came in on a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th and she justified it with a brilliant comeback victory over Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Friday whilst also reaching the semi-finals in the Women’s Doubles alongside Elise Mertens. This first meeting between the two looks likely to need a decider and so backing Kudermetova to win at least a set seems the suitably cautious move. If forced to pick a winner here, though, Qinwen Zheng’s rise shows no signs of stopping easily.
